The challenges included both environmental and financial sustainability making good design very important because a good building reinforces the child development programs that directly benefit the children.
The low building with sloped roofs sits comfortably at the top of a rise near the Metro station. It is set back sufficiently to have an environment of its own, enhanced by masses of plant materials and original art. The natural light that brightens all of the spaces including the corridors, the sense of openness, the good materials and the pleasant appearance are attractive to parents and children. Colors inside and out are muted to coordinate with the landscape, provide a calming effect and to allow the children, their playthings and their creative works to stand out.
